What is a PCL Injury?

The Posterior Cruciate Ligament (PCL) is one of four primary ligaments that connect the thigh bone (femur) to the shin bone (tibia). The PCL is located in the back of the knee and keeps the shin bone from moving backwards too much.

What Causes a PCL Injury?

PCL injuries may be caused by:
  • An impact to the front of the knee, such as when the knee hits the dashboard in an automobile accident, or during a fall when you land on a bent knee
  • Athletes participating in football, basketball, soccer, and rugby most often experience PCL tears
  • Stretching the ligament while twisting or hyperextending the knee
  • A simple misstep

PCL Injury Symptoms

Symptoms of PCL injury may include:
  • Knee pain
  • Mild or severe swelling in the knee
  • A feeling of instability in the knee
  • Difficulties walking or putting weight on the knee

PCL Injury Diagnosis

Our knee specialists can determine if your knee pain is caused by a PCL injury. Your doctor will take your medical history and perform an examination of your knee including comparing your injured knee to your non-injured knee. Your injured knee may appear to sag backwards when bent and it might slide backwards too far, especially when bent more than a 90 degree angle. Your doctor may also order X-rays and MRI.

PCL Injury Treatment

Our knee specialists can develop a treatment plan that is right for you. Your doctor may recommend:
  • Rest
  • Ice
  • Compression
  • Elevation
  • Anti-inflammatory medications
  • Wearing a knee brace
  • Physical Therapy
  • Surgery, if necessary
