What is Bursitis?
The bursae are fluid sacs that reduce friction or rubbing in the tissues of the elbow. Bursitis of the elbow is when the bursae become irritated or inflamed, causing elbow pain.
What Causes Bursitis of the Elbow?
Some causes of bursitis include repetitive motions or positions that put pressure on the joint and/or leaning on your elbows for long periods of time.
Causes of Bursitis of the Elbow:
- Injury or trauma to the area
- Aging
- Certain systemic diseases and conditions like rheumatoid arthritis, gout, and diabetes
- Occupational hazards such as carpet laying, tile setting, gardening, planting and playing a musical instrument.
Bursitis of the Elbow Symptoms
Some common symptoms of bursitis include:
- Achiness or stiffness in the joint
- Hurts to move it or press on it
- Looks swollen and red

- Disabling joint pain
- Sudden inability to move a joint
- Excessive swelling, redness, bruising or a rash in the affected area
- Sharp or shooting pain, especially when you exercise or exert yourself
- A fever
