What is Knee Strain?
Knee strain is damage or instability of the muscles and tendons in the knee. It is different from a knee sprain, which refers to damage to the ligaments of the knee.
What Causes Knee Strain?
Knee strain may be caused by:
- Stretching and tearing of muscles near or around the knee
- Overuse of the knee Weakness or imbalance in knee muscles
- Weakness or imbalance in knee muscles
- Poor posture
- Insufficient foot support from unsuitable shoes
Knee Strain Symptoms
Symptoms of knee strain may include:
- Knee pain
- Knee swelling
- Bruising on or around the knee
- A feeling of instability in the knee
- Difficulties walking
Knee Strain Diagnosis
Our knee specialists can determine if your knee pain is caused by knee strain or another issue. Your doctor will take your medical history and talk with yout about your symptoms, including whether your symptoms appeared suddenly or developed over time. Your doctor will observe any swelling, altered knee shape, tenderness, discoloration, or fluid in the joint. Your doctor may order X-rays, MRI, or arthroscopy (knee scope – a procedure that allows the doctor to see the extent of damage to a joint).
