What is Arthritis?
Arthritis is a degenerative joint disease where the cartilage of the joints is worn away over time or by repetitive motions. Arthritis can also be caused by an auto-immune disease, rheumatoid arthritis. Arthritis causes stiffness, swelling, and pain in the affected joint.
What Causes Arthritis?
Wrist arthritis may be caused by the following:
- Wear and tear to cartilage from aging, joint injury, or infection
- An autoimmune disease (Rheumatoid arthritis)
- Obesity
- Family History
Arthritis Symptoms
Symptoms of hand arthritis may include:
- Hand pain
- Swelling of the hand
- Decreased range of motion
- Stiffness in the hand
- Weakness in the hand
Arthritis Diagnosis
Our hand specialists can determine if your hand pain is caused by arthritis. Your doctor will perform a physical examination and may order X-rays and blood work to determine what kind of arthritis you have.

- A change in activity

- Anti-inflammatory medications
- Physical therapy
- Steroid injections
- Surgery, if necessary
